Her public and private lives so very different that there are times she doesn't know who she is anymore. Is she the strong confident woman that walks into the courtroom or is she the recluse that can be scared of her own shadow?
To the greater public, Eliina is known as Ellie Louis, one of the few female partners in the upstanding law firm of Davis, Woodson and Martin. She is incredibly ambitious, a diligent worker and known to be more than a bit agressive when it is something she is passionate about. But on that same note, her co-workers have always noticed a certain coldness about her in her everyday work. She is intelligent and analytical, though that sometimes gets the double standard label of a bitch. But Eliina has never been known to turn away from that particular term. Sticks and Stones...
At home though, Eliina is often an entirely different person. Her life has always been ruled by the desire to make it past the life she was born and sold into. But past that, Eliina has always struggled to find a true sense of self. She has a number of irrational fears that she often takes medication for to help keep at bay, to prevent a crippling anxiety that if given free reign would keep her confined to her apartment. She has trouble forming any sort of lasting relationship with others. Keeping most at an arms length if at all possible. She dislikes the natural beauty she possesses, often tries to downplay it by wearing modest suits and loose fitting clothing. Men, have the ability to make her uncomfortable something she over compensates for in her professional life. She is often wracked with guilt over the fact that she's been allowed to live a life of privilege while she knows her brothers have not... knows and can't do anything to change. Yet.
Personal Background: The first five years of Eliina's life, were a bit of a blur. She was born to a couple that was already the downhill path of a marriage that was clearly on the rocks. An ambitious mother that married a man who never could find that next big break that he always promised. It was in San Diego California, so far from the home that Petra, their mother had loved, that they finally seemed to settle down in. Perhaps they just ran out of money to keep searching for that illusive big break. Whatever the case, Eliina was born to the warm air of San Diego, three years before the youngest and final brother, Jerzy.
Her earliest memories are not of her mother, or of her father soothing her as she was a colicky baby crying almost constantly. No, it was of her older brother. Though he was barely older than her at five when she was born. That fact never seemed to phase their parents, far too caught up in the trials of their own lives to truly pay the necessary attention to the children that they had brought into the world.
By the time she reached five, Eliina, should have been on her way to Kindergarten, but instead she was still being cared for by her brother Taavi. Eliina had never taken to calling him Tavin, Taavi sounding much more entertaining than Tavin to a five year old tongue. Instead of the alphabet and macaroni crafts, she was learning to watch out for their younger brother as well, such a cute little baby. But they were just babies themselves. She always listened to Taavi though, when he told her to grab her sweatshirt and to hold onto the side of the stroller as they headed out into the night away from all the yelling and fighting that happened at home.
She hated the dark though.
One night, it didn't go as planned. She remembered walking along, a van stopping alongside of them... then nothing but chaos. Taavi fighting as she was picked up easily and thrown in the back of the van. That car ride was the last time she truly saw her brothers. They were immediately separated when they arrived. No matter how much she screamed or fought they pulled her away anyway. Laughing when she cried so hard she hyperventilated. Probably laughed when it finally made her pass out. She woke up where she spent the next few years of her life. A cage was the only real term for where she was held. Perhaps a bit nicer than where her brothers found their way too, she was a little girl after all and she was kept nice and pretty and clean to entice whoever wanted to purchase a cute little human girl.
It didn't take long. Whether that was a good thing or a bad thing in the end is entirely debatable.
His name was Lorenzo Auditore, a wealthy financier who had his fingers in many venues, both in the private and public sectors. But he was also a man... well man was perhaps debatable as his heart only beat at the assistance of the blood he consumed from others. A vampire. He was a vampire who had tastes that were best served with purchases from the underground slave trade. Unless of course he wanted to be crucified in human society. Eliina was a bit of an odd purchase for him, most that he bought being of supernatural blood and thus able to last... But he took a shine to Eliina. Said it was her eyes, reminded him of a young woman he'd loved when he had been human himself so many years ago.
So she was taken in, raised for many years as his... daughter or sorts. Perhaps ward was a better term. Though there was always a bit of an undercurrent of unseemliness. Eliina always said it was the way in which he looked at her, way he kept her contained, locked away from prying eyes and locked away from her own freedom. Of course there was always the occasional sample he took of her blood, too young and fresh to resist he always said. Though her treatment was far better than many could attest to... she saw far too much in that house with her young eyes. Even for old eyes. As she moved on in years, she found the footing and courage to push. Always she was tamped down with a strong hand and the threat that he would find those brothers of hers and put them where they belonged. In their graves.
Private tutors kept her schooling up to date as they moved around the world. She learned of all the places they went but never truly saw them. Not until she was eighteen. The year that Lorenzo finally made her into what he'd always wanted her to be. His public image of legitimacy and of course his mistress. In return, Eliina was gifted an education. Nothing she chose for herself, but rather she was groomed to be exactly what Lorenzo wanted for her.
They moved to California, a large house that Eliina remained bound to except for the classes she took at Stanford University. Classes that were done in less than four years, she was actually quite bright. But that was not the end of it. Another application and another well padded wallet of an administrator and Eliina was attending law school. Just as Lorenzo had planned for her, his own little protege and in house consel. She owed him after all, for pulling her from the waste of a life she would have. She'd always owe him for that, wouldn't she...
The year she graduated she tried to run. She thought she'd been smart enough to cover all her tracks. She'd made it all the way to Mexico... just past the border. Her plan had never been entirely clear, just to get away and find out if all of Lorenzo's words about her brothers had been true. Were they still alive? She could only hope. But she never got to find out. He found her, rather his men found her. The cheap rental car she'd taken from California was no match for the fleet of SUV's that had surrounded her. She tried, in some foolish valiant effort to lose them, but instead her car found itself mangled in a cheap guard rail.
She very nearly died. If not for Lorenzo's ability to fund a rescue flight to a hospital and the emergency surgery that she still wears scars from, she would have died on that roadside. A fact that he wouldn't let her forget. Eliina felt more helpless than the day she'd been taken. She finally submitted to his whims. She dressed as he wished, took up a position at the firm he found. One that dealt often with men of his... kind. She anglicized her name to better fit in with the middle American appeal of the firm. She even died her hair so that she nearly exactly resembled that woman he'd loved so long ago. But she was far from that woman. Underneath her blank exterior was always a seething hatred for him.
The years went on and Eliina finally became a partner in the firm. Lorenzo couldn't have been more proud. He took her around on his arm as often as he could, showing off his beauty. Through all that she had seen, Eliina had always hoped that she'd remained the same inside. But as she used every bit of her hard earned freedom to meet with an enemy of Lorenzo's and arrange his death she knew that she hadn't... It was all that much clearer to her when she became part of the plan, actually lighting the match that set his sleeping form on fire.
It was all covered over as part of the long standing feud Lorenzo had been embroiled in with a competitor, he finally got the best of Lorenzo. Or so Eliina has to hope, pray that it will never be tied back to her, the greiving woman she pretended to be. Her freedom was all too new and Eliina truly did not know what to do with it. She asked for a transfer to the firms Seattle office, surprising as it was known only for it's criminal defense work and not the corporate transactions she had specialized in. Eliina had only wanted out, away from the life she'd had... The move made, a condo purchased in the Old Town Towers, the only thing Eliina knew to do with her life and money was to hire an investigator.
Her brothers were out there... somewhere. They had to be.
